The newly established Africa International University,
Toru-Orua in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, has boasted that
exporting nurses to other countries of the world will be one of the core
priorities of the institution.
The Coordinator, AIU, Mr. Theo Theodorus, who disclosed this
in an interview, said the institution was modelled after universities in
Europe.
The AIU, which began academic activities last week with 510
students, is an initiative of the Bayelsa State Government and is approved by
the National Universities Commission in July 2016.
The university will be run as a Public-Private Partnership
venture. The state government will only provide the enabling environment, while
the funding will come from the private sector.
Theodorus said, ‘’The institution will export nurses to
different parts of the world, as obtainable in Europe, because nursing is one
of our priorities. If universities in Europe can do it, why can’t we do it?
“A plan for the establishment of a medical school and
farming, as well as environmental sciences, is one of our priorities; hence
nursing is one of our priority areas. We really want to be in a situation where
we can export nurses.’’
The coordinator said that the first phase of the university,
the School of Foundation Studies, has the objective of preparing students up
to100 level.
According to him, the school is divided into two parts: the
arts and sciences. For the arts, he stressed, the institution offered courses
such as Business, Law and Management. And for sciences, AIU has farming and
nursing among others.
Theodorus said that out of the 510 students, 400 were given
tuition waivers by the Bayelsa State Government and 50 from the Niger Delta
Amnesty Programme, while 60 were drawn from the six communities hosting the
school.
According to the coordinator, the objective of the
foundation studies is to groom and prepare both arts and science students for
the commencement of the 100 level in October.
