Skin specialist and President Ardent World Inc, a Phillipine-based
global cosmetics company, Angeline Frechter, has said that the use of bleaching
creams and hydroquinone-based cosmetics can damage the skin.
Fretcher spoke at the public presentation of Gluta C
women-friendly range of cosmetics by AWI in collaboration with Sinai Collateral
Limited in Lagos.
Frechter said that hydroquinone, a bleaching agent, is not
safe and could cause skin cancer, in addition to doing irreversible damage to
skin cells.
She said, “If your skin is damaged through bleaching, it is
very difficult to repair it and there is no known product that can reverse it.
What can be done is for the person to stop using these harmful product, that
will stop the progressive damage that is being caused.
“ I suggest that the person should take a break from using
the harmful product for a while and allow the skin to recover and maybe use
moisturisers to keep the skin healthy.
She said that women
should use natural ingredients such as glutathione and vitamin C
to achieve a fairer complexion. Frechter said, “Glutathione is naturally
produced in the body, it is also found in plants that can counter free radicals
that damage the skin, which makes it very safe and Vitamin C, everybody knows,
is good for the body. If you apply the product on the skin, it goes directly on
the skin. Some people ingest vitamin C. If you do so it goes to all parts of
the body; it goes to your skin and your eyes. “
Speaking at the seminar, Chairperson, Sinai Collateral
Limited, Mrs. Charity Ojiaka , advised women to look out for antioxidants when
buying cosmetics.
According to her, antioxidants are safe ingredients that
tone the skin and fight radicals that cause pre-mature aging.
Ojiaka said, “We are aware of the concerns of women and we
have heard their challenges, hence these seminar. I will advise them to use
natural anti-aging ingredients like Moringa, which is very suitable for dry and
rough skin. It helps reduce pores while controlling pimples, blackheads,
whiteheads and acne. It also reduce stretch marks, wrinkles and minor scars.”
