We won’t joke with Bafana –Onazi

Ogenyi Onazi

Super Eagles  stand-in captain Ogenyi Onazi  on Tuesday  said the team had not forgotten  their 2-2 draw against South Africa in their  2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier  at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo three years ago. The result prevented Nigeria from competing at the  Equatorial Guines 2015  finals won by Ivory Coast.

The Eagles meet Bafana Bafana in a Cameroon 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier  at the same venue on Saturday and Onazi  said Nigeria would avoid a bad result this time round.

The  Turkey-based midfielder said, “Of course, we remember that it was in this stadium that we missed the opportunity to play at  AFCON 2015 when we drew with South Africa.  We have not forgotten it. Though it is not a grudge match, we are approaching it with all seriousness.”

Nigeria coach Gernot  Rohr said  Muslims  in the squad  including  Ahmed Musa and Shehu Abdullahi  would train less ahead of  Saturday’s clash because of Ramadan.

He said, “They (Bafana)  are the strongest opponents I will face as Nigeria coach so far. I am also aware that they stopped Nigeria from getting to the AFCON 2015 and that this match is very important to Nigeria.”
